We are beginning 2019 with a 21-day fast that has the power to truly change you. Fasting is literally a time set aside to abstain from food and/or drink and using the logistical and emotional gaps that creates to focus on God' presence and our dire dependency on Him. There are lots of different types of fasts you can do. Our pastor got to attend worship at "The Rock" church in San Diego church. Their pastor Miles McPherson has written a wonderful guide about fasting.
Fasting isn't just about "going without." It's also about "putting within." During these 21-days, every time you think about what you are "giving up," voice a prayer to God. In fact, we encourage everyone to take a little bit of time when you start your day to pray and be in God's word. Here is a great devotional/Bible reading plan to use during this 21-day journey.
We officially start this fast Monday, January 7. The last day of the fast will be Sunday, January 27. That means you get to break the fast (by the way, that's where we get our word "breakfast") on Monday, January 28. We encourage you to journal for those 21 days. Write down stuff you observe God doing in you and around you during this fast. And trust that God is going to use it for His good and glory. Speaking of that, fasting is a very private affair. In fact, Jesus taught that this is something you really don't want to brag about. This is a spiritual discipline that is intimate between you and God. And if you treat it that way, you will experience a closeness to God like no other during these 21 days. There's nothing wrong with letting some folks know that you trust so that they can be praying for you. And if someone asks you about it, you can certainly talk about it in a way that points people to Jesus. But fasting is really about two people: you and God. So if you are willing, GO FOR IT! Our prayer is that God will use this fast to draw you closer to Him like never before!
